ENDOMETRIAL BIOPSY INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS.

What is an Endometrial biopsy?

EB or Endometrial biopsy is a procedure where the physician has to sample the lining of the uterus from inside to biopsy it so that we can rule out cancer. This is the first step before any treatment can be done for your fibroids or heavy bleeding.

How is it performed? Will there any cut on my body?

There is no cut on your body. The biopsy is performed through the vagina. The provider will insert a metal speculum just like he or she is doing a pap smear. Then he or she will insert a very small soft siphon like tube into the cervix and quickly biopsy the lining and take the tube out.

Is the procedure painful and do I get any anesthesia?

There is a moderate amount of pain for few seconds when the provider will pass the tube into the uterus. We recommend Motrin or Advil 600mg 1 hour before the procedure, which helps reduce the pain significantly.

If you want anesthesia and want to go to sleep for the procedure, please inform the provider before scheduling the procedure.

How should I prepare before the procedure?

  • Eat something.
  • Take Motrin or Advil – 2-3 tablets 1 hour before the procedure after food.
  • Take Misoprostol – 2 tablets 6 am in the morning on the day of procedure (if prescribed to you).

What to expect after the procedure?

You may get mild menstrual cramping for a day or few hours after the procedure which can be alleviated by taking Motrin (Ibuprofen) or Tylenol – 650mg.

When do I follow up?

You need to follow up as advised by your provider.
